Digital Smile 12

Cosmetic dentistry is increasingly becoming an issue of concern to patients who hope to improve their smile. A systematic and comprehensive dentofacial analysis must be performed before commencing esthetic treatment. Several computer software programs have been developed for digital smile design (DSD) to assist clinicians in this process. This article compares DSD programs commonly used in cosmetic dentistry and their ability to assess esthetic parameters. A literature review was performed of current dentofacial aesthetic parameters and clinical applications of computer technology to assess facial, dentogingival and dental esthetics. Eight DSD programs (Photoshop CS6, Keynote, Planmeca Romexis Smile Design, Cerec SW 4.2, Aesthetic Digital Smile Design, Smile Designer Pro, DSD App and VisagiSMile) were compared. Photoshop, Keynote and Aesthetic Digital Smile Design included the largest number of esthetic analysis parameters. Other studied DSD programs presented deficiencies in their ability to analyze facial esthetic parameters but included comprehensive dentogingival and dental esthetic functions. The DSD App, Planmeca Romexis Smile Design, and Cerec SW 4.2 were able to perform 3D analysis; furthermore, Cerec SW 4.2 and PRSD could be used jointly with CAD/CAM. The DSD App and Smile Designer Pro are available as mobile phone applications. It can be concluded that despite the fact that they were not specifically designed for dental diagnosis, Photoshop CS6 and Keynote provide a more comprehensive smile analysis than most specialized DSD programs. However, other program functions should also be considered when deciding which DSD program is applicable to individual clinical setups.

Client: unhappy with rollercoaster smile, missing teeth showing in photos, every tooth a different colour. Solution: porcelain crowns and porcelain bridgework on the upper twelve front teeth, resulting in restored health, restored missing teeth, and uniform straight looking smile.

Client: unhappy with upper front six teeth. The upper and lower back teeth were restored with porcelain crowns by Dr Pulvirenti about 10 years ago. The upper front six teeth have large resin fillings that are now worn and are breaking down. Solution: six porcelain crowns placed over the front six teeth. Special care was taken to copy the existing shape of the teeth as the client requested to keep the natural contour of their smile.

Digital Photos, Digital Scans (to replace dental impressions) and Digit Smile Design technology is used to perform all Cosmetic Smile Makeovers at Edward St Dental. This enables the client to see what their new smile will look like before the treatment starts. This has shown to provide comfort and confidence to the patient's smile makeover journey.

Client: unhappy with dental crowding. The client also has two baby teeth still present in the smile as the corresponding permanent teeth are missing. Solution: Clear Aligner treatment to move the upper front teeth into the smile zone, and re-shape the two baby teeth with aesthetic composite resin to copy the shape of permanent teeth. Treatment time 14 months.

For years David dealt with periodontal issues, staining, and the loss of teeth in back of his mouth. After a full mouth restoration David says it's about more than the cosmetic side of treatment. He can now eat anything he wants and the pain is gone. He is confident in his smile and psychologically this has been life-changing!

Brian's sister completed a digital smile design cosmetic makeover and he was so impressed with the final results that he decided to move forward with one for himself ... and literally looks 10 years younger because of it! Clearly, he likes the final result..... and so do we!

Brian is a young guy in tech. Like many people these days, his job requires him to interact with clients via computer meetings. He wanted his smile to reflect his go-getter personality when talking to people. Brian was able to get the perfect smile he desired through Invisalign and KOR whitening. You can't help but smile when you see his now!

Rickye always wondered why she couldn't see her top teeth. She felt like they "hid" behind her upper lip. It wasn't until a friend pointed out that her smile line went up on the left side that she realized why her smile was the way it was! Together Dr. K and her orthodontist worked very hard to make her smile dreams come true. She says the change "lit up her world" and gave her pep in her step!

Rian came to us in hopes of changing her "gummy smile". She didn't like the amount of gum tissue visible when she smiled her best, most comfortable smile. She took a test drive with Digital Smile Design. Here are her results!

Libby had chipping on her front teeth from years of grinding. We talked with Libby to get an idea of what she envisioned for her ideal smile and a conservative approach was taken. Bonding was added to match the colors of the rest of her teeth and to restore the shape of them. Now Libby is loving life!

Our patient did not like the fact that her bonding on her two front teeth was visible to everyone. She felt like it didn't look natural and wanted it re-done. Dr. Kasperowski created a flawless looking smile and was able to close the space between her two front teeth at the gum line. Now telling the difference between bonded and natural teeth is much harder!

Steven had lived a long, adventurous life all over the world. When he came to our office he was ready to take on the next chapter, restoring his teeth back to a beautiful and healthy smile! Implant supported rejuvenation of the upper and lower arches resulted in this dramatic improvement!

Jen's personality lights up the room! She felt like her smile didn't match what we see on the outside though, which is why she came to us. She felt like her teeth were "child-like" and she had chipping along the edges of her teeth. After whitening, gingival contouring, and conservative bonding she now has a beautiful, full smile. Her favorite part is that the teeth you see are all of her natural teeth!

Rene suffered trauma to her front, top teeth as a child. Her teeth were repaired twice with bridges and ultimately the second one needed replacing. Rene is a so strong in every other aspect of her life but the dental office makes her very nervous! She and Dr. K worked together to put her mind at ease and to give her the best smile she deserved.

Bree said, "Before I was able to get my teeth fixed I never liked pictures of myself and I never, ever smiled showing my teeth." Like a lot of people, dental anxiety kept her out of the dental office. Dr. Kasperowski has since changed her mindset! Bree did Invisalign and had porcelain restorations. We bet you can't tell the difference between the natural and porcelain teeth!

Elena is a vivacious jewelry designer who came to us because she was told by another dentist that she was on track to lose all of her teeth! Our hygienist's helped Elena get back to stable periodontal health. Then Dr. Kasperowski restored each tooth with porcelain crowns. Elena has ALL of her teeth and her smile reaches her eyes now!

Steve is a loyal patient of ours who was concerned about his general appearance and overall health and stability of his teeth. His treatment included Invisalign and conservative bondings. Steve says, "When you feel good about your smile people stop looking at your teeth and notice the whole YOU!" We couldn't agree more!

Tom is in consulting and routinely travels the world while working with important companies and clients. His smile needed to match his outward professional appearance so he came to our office for a combination of veneers and crowns. Now he has the confidence to walk into any meeting room and talk to clients with ease.

Not long ago, right when cosmetic dentistry began growing, advanced technologies were sparse. So, the smiles that were designed were very repetitive. Since then, there have been numerous modifications and advancements in the field and smile design is the most recent of them all.

Smile design is a practice that helps dentists design your unique and customized smile par excellence. It thoroughly and comprehensively evaluates your smile to give you an exceptional smile makeover. It uses high-tech software and advanced imaging tools to capture the smallest details of your mouth. The artificial intelligence model uses an intraoral scanner to capture your movements from within your mouth.

How your lips curve when resting and how many teeth naturally show are all very essential aspects to consider in smile design. It helps us understand what your smile is missing and how it works to craft a smile that corrects all the issues while also looking extremely natural.

The following is a clinical case of an everyday bonding procedure that many general practitioners might perform on a regular basis. It was planned using a Digital Smile Design (DSD) protocol and all lab procedures were digitally created.
